Renewable Energy Promotion

Winrock's Clean Energy Group (CEG) operates through the Renewable Energy Program Support Office (REPSO) managed as local organizations worldwide in coordination with WI, fostering cooperation between government agencies, private enterprises, nonprofit organizations, and communities in common pursuit of harnessing proven clean energy technologies for sustainable development.

WI seeks to create positive momentum and attract capital to the rural energy sector. WI’s strengths lie in its ability to build local institutional capabilities to foster sustainable development assistance efforts; organize multidisciplinary teams and execute targeted technical assistance projects; bring about successful adaptation and transfer of renewable energy technology; and to link project developers with technology vendors and specialists. REPSO/Nepal has extensive experience in renewable energy (RE) development in Nepal and the Asia Pacific region.  We have successfully carried out energy-related policy studies for a number of international funding agencies and clients for over 15 years.

Renewable Energy Experience.  Winrock is a recognized leader in the drive to expand the use of clean, Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) worldwide. Through the work of the CEG, renewable energy projects are bringing modern energy services to millions of people throughout the developing world.  Working in tandem with local communities, governments, financial institutions, nongovernmental organizations, and other partners, the CEG carries out its mission through a mix of products and services, including:

Renewable Energy Promotion in Nepal

In Nepal, WI has promoted and integrated renewable energy systems in rural communities, made improvements to and recommendations on policy framework and investment programs for renewable energy technologies (RETs), introduced renewable energy options for livelihood and poverty alleviation initiatives, facilitated linkages between micro financing and RETs, and built the capacity of NGOs, industry associations, private project developers, and government agencies. WI’s activities promoting use of renewable forms of energy, including promotion of community based rural electrification have been closely aligned with government plans and policies. WI has close working relationships with various government agencies, and non-government organizations across Nepal.

Specifically in Nepal, by working with local partners to implement model projects that illustrates the potential synergy between development of new products, improved rural services, and private profits, WI seeks to create positive momentum and attract capital to the rural energy sector, thereby weakening the incentive for the deprived rural community to join the insurgency. Winrock’s strengths lie in its ability to build local institutional capabilities to foster sustainable development assistance efforts; organize multidisciplinary teams and execute targeted technical assistance projects; bring about successful adaptation and transfer of renewable energy technology; and to link project developers with technology vendors and specialists.
